Meet Sumita

An artisan from West Bengal

Sumita is extremely skilled at garment-finishing. However, she aspires to become a beautician one day—it’s her childhood dream. She has been working at The Burnt Soul for two years and lives in Govindpuri, New Delhi with her husband.

“In the time of crises, it’s the only place where I find relief and peace. Going to work gives me freedom and it is a big part of who I am. I am grateful for the work here. And, I want the same independence for my children too,” she smiles. Perhaps this is the reason why she started working at the young age of 21. Like a true-blue Bengali, Sumita loves eating fish and rice and wishes she can sit in an airplane one day
